Carl’s Hut

A fire-side chat between Greg Kerr and his designer wife Susan To in 2021 proved to be pivotal in the evolving story of the vineyard. They were sitting in an old pioneer’s hut discussing ways to diversify their wine business, when a beam of sunlight began to shine through a nearby window.

it was then Susan imagined how it would be if the old cabin,
complete with its dirt floors and dilapidated timber beams, was transformed into a luxury space where guests could unwind, wine and dine by a fire while kangaroos grazed nearby and workers pruned vines… Twelve months later that vision was realised in spectacular fashion when Carl’s Hut began hosting its first guests.

There is parking provided on site.

Carl’s Hut is situated in a working vineyard farm. Guests are asked to stay within the fenced area of Carl’s Hut for their safety and bio security purposes. Please do not walk amongst the vines without permission. Strictly no driving around the vineyard without consent.

There is a $30 fee for each allocated batch of firewood used (there will be a batch next to the inside fireplace and a batch for the outside fire pit upon arrival). Please see guest notes upon arrival for payment details.
No pets or children.
No weddings, pre-wedding preparation and parties or group events or gathering are permitted without written consent.
No commercial or professional shoots, editorial shoots or elopements with-out written consent from the hosts.
There is a minimum $750 charge if any of the above takes place.
Carl’s Hut is on the grounds of Solitude Estate in Yellingbo, a peaceful township in the upper Yarra Valley, with panoramic views of the Great Dividing Range and Dandenongs. It is also home to the rare and endangered helmeted honey-eater, significant nature conservation reserves as well as berry, olive and livestock farms.

Quiet and set seemingly a world away from the clamour of modern life, Carl’s Hut is located in a natural amphitheatre, enclosed by forests and rolling hills, with views of distant mountain tops. It is the perfect setting for a couple or a single person to rest and a re-connect with nature.

And to do it in style and comfort with slab-heated polished concrete floors, split system air conditioning and a Klipsch heritage bluetooth / wifi speaker. There is also an open fire place for those cosy winter nights, and a beautifully appointed bathroom with floor-to-ceiling windows. All this (and more) only one hour’s drive from Melbourne.

Carl’s Hut at Solitude is a gate-way to a wonderful array of places to visit including nearby Kurth Kiln Regional Park , the Yarra Valley Bike trail (especially the Woori Yallock to Warburton section), the Warburton Forest Gallery, Puffing Billy, Cloudehill Garden and Nursery at Olinda, Tarrawarra Museum of Modern Art, Badger Weir and Healesville Sanctuary.
And it’s the perfect base for a magical balloon experience with Global Ballooning Australia, just 10 minutes away.

The Yarra Valley is also home to some of Victoria’s best wineries and restaurants. There are too many to mention but some of our favourites include The Independent at Gembrook, One Block at Healesville, Levantine Hill Estate and St Huberts at Coldstream.
