About Us

Our unique cool climate location – with its interesting volcanic and Cambrian soils – enables our grapes to slowly ripen, acquiring good balance, finesse and exceptional aromatics.

Our grapes consistently feature in prestigious “reserve” and “single vineyard” wine labels, earning Tibooburra Vineyard a reputation as one of the finest wine producers in the Yarra Valley. Small batches of fruit from the best sites of the vineyard are also chosen for the Solitude Estate label.

“One of the best weapons you have as a viticulturalist is to recognise the natural assets of your property, to work carefully with that template and to be patient.”

Some other significant milestones include our
selection in the Young Gun of Wine Australia’s
Top 50 Vineyards (2021), the launching of Carl’s
Hut as a luxury stay in 2022, as well as the
discovery of Victoria’s first black truffles in 2005
grown at the vineyard.

The Solitude label was launched in 2008 upon
the discovery of 1854 mapping which revealed
the site of the vineyard to be central to the
original Solitude Station. The inaugural 2008
Solitude Chardonnay won gold at the Yarra
Valley Wine Show, setting a standard for many
successful vintages to follow.

A Special Legacy

We have benefitted handsomely from the vision and generosity of Laurie and
Vivienne Kerr, the founders of Tibooburra Angus Stud and Vineyard.
Optimism and a sense of “we’ll give it a go” underwrote the first plantings in 1996.

From little things
big things grow

Tibooburra’s beginnings date back to the late 1960s when Laurie and Vivienne Kerr first purchased some land in Hoddles Creek as a holiday farm for their family.

The Kerrs soon began to dabble with cattle and by the 1980s had established one of Australia’s most successful Angus herds, culminating in Tibooburra being chosen as a host property for the 1997 World Angus Forum, attracting hundreds of Angus breeders from around the globe.

The first plantings were undertaken in 1996 with additions in ’97, ’99, 2001, ’05, ’12 and ’20. It now comprises about 70 acres of vines, featuring Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz.

Environment

The vines are set among a number of strategic conversation reserves, a programme that the Kerrs started in the 1980s. This thriving ecosystem helps to ensure the survival of rare and endangered species including the helmeted honeyeater and Leadbeater’s possum, and encourages populations of beneficial insects as well as birds of prey.
